Inspiring the Future Workforce

On Thursday, April 23rd, the Country Club of Sapphire Valley was filled with curiosity, conversation, and career exploration as 160 seventh- and eighth-grade students gathered for the annual career conference.

Hosted in partnership with the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, and the Education Task Force of Vision Cashiers, and local schools, the event brought together students from Blue Ridge Early College, Highlands School, and Summit Charter School for a day focused on possibility and discovery.

The conference featured two keynote speakers: Brandon Norwood, Health and Wellness Director at the Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, and Stote Ellsworth, an electrical engineer and entrepreneur. Both speakers shared honest and engaging stories about their career journeys, including the challenges they faced, the successes they celebrated, and how they ultimately found their passions.

Following the presentations, students rotated through sessions led by local professionals representing a variety of fields, including emergency services, healthcare, construction, cosmetology, and skilled trades. Participating organizations included Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad, the Macon County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, Reid Construction, Shelton’s Heating and AC, and Tangles in Cashiers, among others.

Each presenter discussed their daily work and their educational journey to get to where they are today.

Students also participated in hands-on activities designed to simulate real-world job tasks, giving them a practical understanding of different career paths. The event included opportunities for students to ask questions and connect directly with professionals.

By the end of the day, the impact was clear. Students described the experience as inspiring and eye-opening, sharing appreciation for the chance to learn from members of their own community.

For many, the conference was more than just a school event. It was a glimpse into the future and a reminder that there are many paths to success, each with its own story waiting to be written.
