On Thursday, April 24, the Country Club of Sapphire Valley hosted a dynamic career conference in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, the Education Task Force of Vision Cashiers, and local schools. Seventh- and eighth-grade students from Blue Ridge Early College, Highlands School, and Summit Charter School participated in the annual event, which also welcomed nineteen dedicated community volunteers.
The career conference showcased two keynote speakers: Kayla Deaton, the Director of Resource Development at the Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, and Josh Payne, a Private Chef and Caterer. They delivered engaging presentations about their career paths and shared essential insights on achieving success with the students.
The student groups were then led around the property, where they heard pitches from 16 local professionals who have served in a variety of careers and roles. The diverse range of professions included first responders, healthcare, fitness, culinary, golf professionals, interior design, construction, real estate, fly fishing, cosmetology, and the military, offering students a glimpse into numerous career paths. Each professional shared insights into their daily work life, the challenges they face, and the rewards of their respective fields.
Students were encouraged to engage in hands-on activities designed to simulate real-world job tasks. These activities provided a practical understanding of the skills required in different industries. From CPR demonstrations to casting fly fishing lines, the conference was a dynamic learning experience that aimed to inspire students to explore their interests and passions.
Additionally, there were networking opportunities where students could ask questions and seek advice from the professionals. This interaction allowed students to gain valuable mentorship and guidance as they consider their future careers. The career conference not only educated but also motivated the students, leaving them with a renewed sense of excitement about the possibilities that await them.
When asked what they enjoyed most about the career conference, students highlighted meeting new people, making friends, exploring a wide variety of professions, and gaining a clearer sense of their future possibilities. One student shared, “It helped open up my range of career interests,” while another said, “I got to learn what I can do when I’m older.”
