BGCP Receives Hero for Youth Award - Club Recognized for Advocacy on Behalf of Youth

Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau (BGCP) received a Hero for Youth award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America for its advocacy on behalf of North Carolina youth. BGCP was recognized for its impactful engagement with local, state, and national representatives and community partners.

“Clubs like ours have a unique role as community leaders in providing valuable afterschool programs free of charge to our country’s youth that enable them to achieve great futures,” said Carmen Waite, CEO.  “We are wholly committed to raising the visibility of the needs of the youth in our community, especially the ones who need us most, and show what we can accomplish with the support of our elected officials and our community.”   

Last August, BGCP hosted Congressman Chuck Edwards for a site visit focused on 21st Century Community Learning Centers. During his visit, he met with Club leadership, members, and afterschool advocates, toured facilities, and observed programs in action. He also heard directly from youth and community members about the meaningful impact afterschool and summer learning programs have on children and working families throughout the district. The visit highlighted the essential role these programs play in providing safe, affordable care during critical hours, helping parents remain in the workforce while supporting the strength of the local economy and communities.

“Boys & Girls Clubs champion opportunities for all youth, equipping young people with the experiences and tools they need to succeed,” said Waite. “Our advocacy is not just a one-day event. Our staff, volunteers, and parents are raising our voices every single day to ensure top issues and solutions impacting young people are prioritized in our community, our state, and at the national level.”
